What’s the Big Idea? Keeping Your Vision Front and Center

I’ve written before about the fact that you need more than a good idea to turn your business into an industry-influencing success. I still believe that to be true, but you still need to have a big idea if you’re going to stand out from your competitors. “Me too” companies are a dime a dozen and they don’t lead to dramatic growth or influence. You still need that big idea that drives your company’s business. But then what? Let’s look at keeping your vision front and center—so that it transforms your company and drives real, sustainable growth.

Your Vision Drives Your Goals

Let me clarify. I’m not talking about your Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG). That might be something along the lines of “improving sales by $1M each quarter for 2018.” I’m talking about your vision—the idea that’s going to make that BHAG possible. Let’s look at an example.

When you think about a business that has revolutionized the way we live, it’s hard to ignore Amazon. Not only the company made Jeff Bezos one of the richest men in the world, but it’s also changed the way society works. When Bezos was interviewed recently he outlined Amazon’s three brand promises. Interestingly, he referred to them as three big ideas:

  • Low Prices
  • Fast Delivery
  • Vast Selection

Guess what? When you think of Amazon, those are the things you think about. And it’s not by accident.

Keeping Big Ideas Front And Center

However, it’s not enough to have those ideas. You need to have the right people in place to ensure those things happen. You’ve got to have the right strategy to pull them off. You’ve got to manage your cash well to keep things going. And you’ve got to execute well.

That is perhaps the key to Amazon’s success. They keep things simple (Three big ideas) and they work constantly to get a little better each week at what they already do better than anybody else in the industry.

What’s your big idea? Do you have the people, the strategy, the cash, and the excellence in execution to make those big ideas pay off? Those are the things that are necessary to transform your business and prepare yourself for explosive growth. If you’re curious about seeing where you currently stand in those key areas, I encourage you to take this quick, free assessment to find out! Once you know where you stand, you can work on those things regularly to get a little better each week.
