Breaking new ground and trying things that haven’t been done before takes a certain kind of individual. That’s why entrepreneurial types are—by nature—self-starters and hard workers. They don’t sit around waiting for someone to get the ball rolling. You may identify. So if you have a goal to really scale up your business and take it to the next level, you’re probably ready to roll up your sleeves and do it. Do you really need a business coach to grow your business?

Your Work Ethic Isn’t The Problem
As a Colorado business coach and business strategist, I’ve worked with some really remarkable people. Almost without exception, I can tell you that what kept them from the kind of growth they wanted was not their work ethic. The companies I work with aren’t afraid of working hard. Working harder generally isn’t the problem.

Your Past Successes Aren’t Your Solution Moving Forward
Most of the business leaders I work with didn’t get to where they are without some degree of success. But, as Marshall Goldsmith’s best selling book explains: What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. In fact, past successes can actually give you a false sense of security. The business world is constantly changing and you need to evolve with it.

One of my clients captured this perfectly. Matthew is an entrepreneur who purchased a successful web development company a while back with the intent of growing it even more. Here’s how he described his situation.

“Although I’d successfully run businesses before, I realized I needed a mentor to help me reset the company compass, make some significant changes, and grow the company. Perhaps most important of all, I needed a CEO-level sounding board who understood where I was going and could help me get there. In short, we began transforming the company. Could I have done it without Chuck’s help? Maybe, but it wasn’t happening. I was so deep in the everyday workings of the company that I couldn’t see the forest for the trees.”

It Won’t Happen Overnight

Before you can grow your company you need to transform it so that it’s ready to handle the challenges that growth brings. Again, I’ll let Matthew tell it in his own words.

“To be honest, it probably took six months to a year before we started seeing short-term results. And I firmly believe that we haven’t even begun to see the long-term impact, yet! Chuck helped us change our thinking and actions. The transformation is ongoing, but we’ve got a great start.”

Do You Really Need a Business Coach?
You probably don’t need a business coach if you’re looking for someone to come into your company and give you a pep talk. If you’re simply interested in the latest leadership trends and fads, you can probably find a consultant who will deliver that. However, if you’re looking for someone who will find out what it is you want to do and help you map out a personalized business strategy to get there—you may need a coach. And if you want someone who will be there with you to help you develop the skills and the disciplines necessary to make changes—you may need a coach.

 Are You Ready for Transformation?

In my experience, business coaching is about more than creating business plans and sharing new ideas. It’s about figuring out where you really want to take your business and then transforming your business to make it happen. Frankly, it’s not for everyone. Are you ready to transform your business? Here’s a short (just 5 minutes) assessment to help you see if you and your business are ready for the kind of transformation that will lead you to sustainable growth. Take a look and see if it’s right for you.
