Does Your Hiring Process Need Transformation?
If you’ve been following business trends over the past few years you’ve read or heard about the fact that companies are having a tough time finding the right employees for key positions. There simply aren’t enough qualified employees to go around. And hiring is only half the battle. Keeping great employees is more of a challenge than ever. These days you have to transform your company to win the battle for great employees.

Having—and retaining—great employees is more than just a way to sustain your business. It’s a competitive advantage. Happy, motivated employees are more effective and productive. On top of that, their attitude affects others. What we’re talking about here is your company’s culture. The truth is that you don’t create a culture with small perks, awards, or benefits (those things are OK, but they can’t be the main focus). A thriving business culture comes from employees that are thriving. As Aaron Hurst writes in a recent LinkedIn article, “What is holding back the growth of your business? Talent. You can’t hire fast enough. You see other organizations constantly recruiting your team members. This challenge is not going to get easier – it is expected to get much harder.”
I’ve written before about how important it is to have the right employees in the right positions in your company. Don’t be satisfied with simply “filling seats” if you’re serious about scaling up your business. Let’s look at how you can make that happen.
Why Would Someone Want to Work with You?
Ask yourself why someone would want to work for your company. Sure, you need to offer a competitive salary. Yes, it’s good to have great benefits. Of course, you want to create a pleasant environment and even make it a fun place to work. But great company culture is about more than just “Casual Friday.” The kind of employees you’re after wanting more. They want fulfillment, and they want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Hiring is Not an Isolated Event
As is so often the case with scaling up a business, important actions such as hiring can’t be an isolated event. You need to constantly review your hiring practices. Do you keep going back to the same sources for new hires? Is that working out? Are you staying in touch with what potential employees want? Do you follow up with new hires to ensure that they are motivated, engaged, and listened to?
Transforming your hiring practices is an ongoing process. As your company scales up and grows, your hiring needs will change. Don’t get trapped with the wrong hiring strategy. The people that were a good fit for you yesterday (or today) may not be the right fit for the company you want to become.
