A Business Coach Can Help You Gain a New Perspective

Businesses are often looking for the next “big thing.” They want to stand out from the competition. They want to disrupt an industry—or at least their little corner of the industry. Some years ago many of us were (and frankly still are) fascinated by the Apple ad campaign that celebrated “The Crazy Ones” and encouraged us to “Think Different.” That’s where a great business coach can help. Sometimes what you need is not something brand new, but a different way of looking at things. A business coach can help you gain a new perspective.

Great Ideas Don’t Have to be New

I came across an article recently that illustrated this idea that it’s not necessarily a completely new idea that can cause explosive growth. Sometimes it’s just a different way of looking at things that’s important. A recent report by money.cnn.com mentioned that Netflix (for a short time) was actually worth more than Disney and Comcast.

That’s pretty amazing (even though by the close of the day, Disney had recaptured their financial lead over Netflix). But what’s interesting to me is how Netflix grew so phenomenally over such a short period of time. They really didn’t reinvent home entertainment. People had been watching movies and documentaries in the homes for quite a long time. But Netflix had a different perspective. They looked at howpeople were consuming entertainment.

Increasing numbers of people weren’t going out to stores to buy or rent movies and concerts and television shows. They were looking for the content online. As a result, Netflix added millions of subscribers around the globe. But there were other sources that offered streaming services. Where Netflix really made their mark was when they began developing original content (with shows such as “Stranger Things”, “Orange is the New Black”, and “The Crown” just to mention a few). It was a gamble that paid off.

As a business coach, I help companies look at their business vision, their strategies, and their execution on a regular basis. Because I come from outside the company, I can encourage these companies to look at their business plans and their vision from a slightly different perspective.

New is Good. Better is Better. Different May be Best.

Sometimes the key to growth and success is not just doing something better—or even doing something new—it’s doing something differently than it’s being done. Not only does that present the possibility of increased growth (financially), it also makes life more interesting for the leadership and the employees. Successful businesses know that it’s not enough to hire great people—you also need to develop your employeesif you want to grow your business. Part of developing your employees means getting them to look at new possibilities.

If your company isn’t growing the way you want it to, you may want to take a look at how well you’re developing your people. Of course, that’s only one of the key areas you’ll need to work on. I invite you to click on the orange button below to take a 5-minute assessment that will help you see where you stand in these and other areas that may be keeping you from the kind of growth you want to experience.
